Where is Howth?
Hidden away in the corner of north country Dublin is a stunning village called Howth. If you arrived by air you probably saw it whilst land. It is stunning from the air. The hill or summit is home to some of most beautiful views in Ireland. The way it cuts the coast of Ireland gives some of the spectacular views from air and water. Howth is a village on the peninsula of north county Dublin just 15 kms from Dublin city center and connects to the city by road, dart (light rail) and bus. With Howth harbour, Head and Summit this is a really beautiful spot and one that I have frequented a lot over the years mainly as I have friends living here. Its called Howth Village but really and its bigger and has more activity than most towns in Ireland I know. Whether you arrive by car or Dart you will drive by the coastline at some point and be taken aback by its beauty. The harbour is filled with activity with great restaurants and its a great place to hang out, shop, go boating or walking whatever takes your fancy. Howth has so much to offer and do if you get a chance to visit you really should. If the weather is good you wont be disappointed. As its on the coast sailing is huge and the Yacht Club is very active and a great spot. On a typical visit I head to the harbour. If the market is on I make it a must on my list for the day. Great artisan foods choices and crafts and jewelry from the vast array of vendors. They have a few indoor shop fronts as well if you want to sit in and get a coffee or scoop of gelato. There’s a great atmosphere here and its a lovely way to start the day. Its relatively easy to get parking this makes the trip easier if you drive. The market is on Saturday and Sunday mornings and mid afternoons.
If you have a hankering for fish as your on the coast Beshoff Bros on the harbour road is a famous Dublin fish & chip spot. People go nuts for this place. They are famous for their batter which somehow is lighter than the norm and the chips are thick and well cut from great potatoes just like they should be. The Brass Monkey is currently my favourite restaurant in this area and I’ve never had a bad meal here. Service is good and the price is OK. Ireland is one of the most expensive countries in Europe so you just kind of accept that. The last one I’ll recommend is The Summit Inn mainly as I’ve been here so many times. My friends live around the corner lucky sods. If you out for a walk on the cliffs this can be a perfect spot to eat or to warm up.
Howth Tip –
if it’s a Sunday or the sun is shining, get there early or take the dart. Otherwise you’ll sit in traffic on the coast road. It’s a great place to visit and live and if you have time it’s well worth the visit. To my friends Elaine & Paul who make Howth even more special. Its nice to always know a native 🙂 Thanks for all the good times in Howth. http://howthmarket.ie/
